Teaching

Margaret Martin Kvamme shares her love of classical music with piano and organ students, ages 8 and up. About 50% of her students are adults. Kvamme teaches not only the mechanics of music reading and good technique, but also the necessary vocabulary and skills to understand, enjoy and communicate about music in its broader contexts. Nearly every private lesson assignment includes exercises in music theory, as well as discussions placing the repertoire in the continuum of music history. Understanding of structure and a piece's time and place opens doors to expression in performance. Ear training, keyboard harmony and improvisation skills are also woven into the curriculum. Organists and pianists involved in church work are taught to play hymns and service music as leaders of song in liturgy, as well as how to be supportive accompanists. For organists who lead choirs while playing, console conducting is also coached.

Even from a young age, ergonomic playing that secures technical facility and avoids repetitive use injury is a high priority. Kvamme weaves the principles of Taubmann, Alexander, and Pilates into her instruction.

Bi-annual studio recitals and opportunities to play for other events that are carefully curated and encourage students to reach for more polish are a part of Kvamme's curriculum.

Four of Kvamme's private organ students have won the San Jose American Guild Of Organists' Chapter Frasier Scholarship, and one was winner of the Regional Young Organists' Competition for the Western states area.
